The Rising Sun
/Life thrives here,
the real estate for presence
at a premium, compacted
into small spaces that force
an upright spirit, moderated
by the rules of rank and bow.
My foreign eyes may not see the subtleties,
my offshore ears may mistake their world for mine,
my alien ways may be out off-putting and out of place,
but, whether laughable or laudable, my spirit
seeks the common ground of the soul,
the premium real estate for presence,
where foreign hearts find kinship in each other.
I extracted this poem from my daily intention
written on November 30, on my first day in Tokyo.
