Lovesick Sea

My heart knew you before
I began to feel the grip of time,
before the world rolled out
to meet me like a red carpet,
before I knew what it was
to be brokenhearted.

My heart knew you long before
you stepped through the winter doorway
tossing me on the love sick sea.

Even before that, my heart knew you
like the first blossom of the first spring
and knew you would be in every blossom after that wherever I go humming

I was lost in the ocean
of your eyes; lost in an ache
I can’t control and
I will not forsake.

If ever I’ve had occasion to pray,
this is it. I’m not yet on my knees,
but now that I am in the grip of time,
I am hungry for everything you teach me
about loving and letting go

Most of us have been shamed at some point along the way. Shame is a powerful social mechanism because we all have a deep need for belonging. Although shame can keep us humble, it often turns into an inner tyrant that can run roughshod over us diminishing and defeating us. This poem celebrates the times when shame loses its grip and, if it comes, it simply flows through us as does any other passing thought or emotion. Then we can let our changing thoughts and feelings become notes in the music of our lives.
