Fog Walking

P1000596.jpg

Fog is a great teacher,
blurring out the long view,
bringing my vision closer to home,
and giving the world an immediacy
that requires attentiveness.

I enjoyed a morning stroll in the fog around Capitol Park in Sacramento and composed this poem in the process.

It forces me to find my clarity,
not in the distant vision,
but in the world revealed
by walking in it.

The circle of my awareness
travels with me, as the world
I just passed disappears
into the haze behind me
and the path ahead opens
and offers itself to me.

Our dreams and goals may give us direction, but, even more important, they teach us what life has in store for us as we walk toward it. Think of a moment when the path to your goal revealed something unexpected to you about life, about the world, about others, or about yourself?

Like the days of my life
opening and closing,
passing one into another,
the past blurring into a haze
but a bit more like the wake
from a boat because I can see
further behind me than I can ahead.

I may have a grand vision
of where I am going, or a place
I pin on the coordinates of a map.
My imagined paradise may or
may not ever appear but I know
I will learn by walking toward it
what life has in store for me.
